Education & Workforce Training

A dynamic economy is only as strong as the available source of labor. You can count on a strong labor force here in Jones County that is sizeable in number, well-trained and dedicated to hard work.

Jones County has an estimated population of over 68,000 residents. We’re a thriving community with a median age of 35.8 years. Over 80% of our workers are employed by private enterprise, either self-employed or with private firms and corporations.

We also have a technically skilled workforce thanks to numerous job and career training opportunities here in Jones County. Besides two public school systems, we also have a strong technical and vocational training venue in Jones County Junior College (JCJC), a leader in allied health and computer training certification. JCJC recently expanded their capabilities with the Whitehead Advanced Technology Center, a training and startup incubation facility for the high technology industry.

The University of Southern Mississippi is one of the largest public universities in the State of Mississippi. The main campus located in Hattiesburg – less than thirty miles from Laurel along Interstate 59 – this fully-accredited four-year school offers several bachelors, masters and doctoral degree programs. In recent years, Southern Miss has developed advanced research and study programs in polymer science, and is a driving force in progressing advanced technology in our area.

Of course, all this depends on a work force committed to advancement and enterprise – and based on our history you would be hard-pressed to find a more cooperative community. You’ll encounter not only capable people in Jones County, but also individuals with an eye on the future, willing and eager to adapt to a dynamic economic environment.
