ELLISVILLE, MS (WDAM)- The iconic red Radio Flyer wagon has been reinvented by a man in Ellisville.
Ted Mangum began with a 1987 ambulance, and after 2,000 hours of metal and paint work, ended up with an 18 foot long motorized Radio Flyer. This makes it the world's largest motorized Radio Flyer.
"I wanted to build something real unusual. I fooled with hotrods and antique cars all my life," said Mangum.
Mangum, who retired after 17 years of teaching paint and body work at Jones County Vocational School, did most of the work himself. He says the total cost of the project was around $8,000.
Don't be alarmed if you see this mammoth machine rolling down I-59, it's completely street legal.
"It holds legally 11 people, with seat belts. It's tagged. Got the inspection sticker. It will run just as fast as you want to go with it," explained Mangum.
He says the best part of owning this eye-catching wagon, is the joy it brings to the people he shares it with.
"Children's hospitals and elementary schools. It's just the little kids, and the older adults that had a radio flyer when they were little. It fascinates all of them," said Mangum.
